Momin (Real Believer).

In Quranic terminology: “Believers are those rightly guided people whose hearts tremble at the remembrance of God, whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and who place their trust in their Lord alone. They establish prayer and give zakat. These are the true believers.”

The religion of Abraham is founded upon belief in the Oneness of God, the Last Day, and the verses revealed by God. Righteous deeds must accompany this faith. Therefore, God grants guidance to those who possess both faith and righteous deeds, and in Qur’anic terminology, these rightly guided people are called believers. Success in the Hereafter is linked to attaining this level of faith.

Q-08:02-04

True believers are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and who place their trust in their Lord alone. (2) They establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them. (3) These are the true believers. (4)

Q-10:09

Indeed, those who believe and perform righteous deeds, their Lord guides them because of their faith.

Q-103:01-03

By the passage of time: (1) Surely, mankind is in loss, (2) except those who believe and perform righteous deeds. (3)

Hidayat (God Guidance).

When a servant of God believes in the Oneness of God, the Last Day, and the revealed verses, and acts upon them, God illuminates his heart with His verses and shows him the Straight Path. At this stage, the skin of those who fear God trembles, and then their hearts and skin soften at the remembrance of God. This is the true guidance of God.

Q-06:125

Thus, whoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his heart to Islam.

Q-39:23

Allah has revealed the best of speech, a Book whose verses align with other books and are repeated. At this, the skins of the God-fearing shudder. Then, at the remembrance of Allah, their skins and their hearts soften. This is Allah’s guidance.

A promise of step-by-step guidance.

Guidance is the very point of distinction between a Muslim and a believer, a distinction the Quran has clarified in numerous places: To be a “Muslim” is essentially to declare one’s submission, whereas becoming a “believer” is a spiritual rank attained through obedience to Allah’s verses, compliance with His commands, and submission of one’s desires to His law.

Allah Almighty promises the believers that He will grant them further guidance and higher ranks in accordance with their faith and righteousness.

Illustration: Gold begins as unrefined metal, but it becomes pure only after being heated in fire and cleansed of its impurities. Likewise, a person’s faith becomes pure and acceptable only when the commands of the Qur’an govern his entire being and shape his character accordingly.

Q-03:101

Whoever holds firmly to Allah has surely been guided to the Straight Path.

Q-19:76

As for those who follow the path of guidance, Allah increases them in guidance.

Q-47:17

As for those who have found guidance, He increases them in guidance and grants them their righteousness (taqwa).

Guidance’s Result: A Momin’s Status.

When a servant believes, performs righteous deeds, repents of his sins, and turns to Allah with sincerity and humility, he reaches a level of faith at which Allah’s promise to those who repent is fulfilled. That is, Allah grants him higher levels of guidance and places him under the special shade of His mercy.

In conclusion, the declaration of Islam makes a person a member of the Muslim community, but the state of salvation, namely the rank of a true believer, is attained through righteous deeds, sincere repentance, and genuine faith.

Q-25:70-71

But as for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds, Allah will transform their evil deeds into good deeds. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. (70) Whoever repents and performs righteous deeds has truly turned to Allah in sincere repentance. (71)

Q-10:09

Indeed, those who believe and perform righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them through their faith. Rivers will flow beneath them in the Gardens of Bliss.

Q-47:17

As for those who have received guidance, He increases them in guidance and grants them righteousness.

Sign of a Guided Momin (Believer).

Verse 23 of Surah Az-Zumar describes the living and timeless influence of the Qur’an, which remains fully meaningful even today. This humble servant has also experienced it personally. When rightly guided believers read or hear the Qur’an, the majesty and glory of Allah deeply affect their hearts. Their bodies tremble, and their skin shudders with fear of Allah. Then, when the remembrance of Allah touches their hearts, awe turns into peace, trembling into reassurance, and hardness of heart into tenderness.

If these believers ever stumble and wrong themselves, they do not persist in sin. As soon as they become aware of their wrongdoing, their hearts are filled with remorse. They remember their Lord, seek His forgiveness, and return to His commands.

These, then, are the truly guided ones, whose hearts have been awakened by the Qur’an and softened by the remembrance of Allah.

Q-39:23

Allah has revealed the best message, the Qur’an, a Book consistent in its teachings and repeating the truths of the earlier Scriptures. The skin of those who fear their Lord trembles when they read or hear it. Then their skin and hearts soften at the remembrance of Allah. This is a divine guidance (Hidayat). Through this Quran, Allah guides whomever He wills; and there is no one to guide the one whom Allah leaves to stray.

Q-03:134-136

Those who spend in times of prosperity and hardship, restrain their anger, and forgive others. Allah loves those who do good. (134)
And those who, after committing an indecent act or wronging themselves through sin, whether knowingly or unknowingly, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins. And who can forgive sins except Allah? They do not knowingly persist in what they have done. (135)
Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens of Paradise. (136)

Q-49:15

The true believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then harbored no doubt, and who have striven in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. It is they who are the truthful ones.

Attributes of a Momin.

We do not need a certificate to determine which stage of faith we are currently traversing, whether that of a Muslim, a *Mu'min* or a *Muttaqi*. Allah has clearly described the qualities of each stage in the Qur’an. We can assess ourselves to see where we stand. However, the final decision rests with Allah alone, for He knows things about us that we do not know about ourselves.

The Momin are those who. . . . . .

1. Those Who Worship Sincerely.

Momin (Believers) worship the Lord of all the worlds with sincerity; they associate no partners with Him, and place their trust in Him alone.

Q-39:02-03

Therefore, worship Allah, devoting your obedience sincerely to Him. (2) Surely, sincere devotion belongs to Allah alone. (3)

Q-39:11

Say: "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, while being sincere to Him in the religion."

Q-09:129

There is no deity but Him; upon Him I have placed my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.

2. Those Who Perform righteous deeds.

Momin (Believers) are those who sincerely believe in the verses of Allah and live according to them. They have no inclination toward immorality or sin, and when anger overcomes them, they choose forgiveness instead. Their willingness to forgive is proof that they do not seek personal revenge; rather, everything they do is solely for the pleasure of Allah.

Q-42:36-37

Momin are those who have faith and place their trust in their Lord, and who avoid major sins and acts of immorality; and when they become angry, they forgive.

Q-03:134

They are those who spend in both prosperity and hardship, who restrain their anger and pardon others. And Allah loves those who do good.

3. Those Who Seek Guidance from the Quran.

Allah has made the Qur’an a beacon of light and guidance for the faithful. When its verses are recited to them, their faith grows stronger. They fall in prostration, glorify and praise their Lord, and remain far removed from arrogance. For Allah does not love the arrogant.

Q-45:20

This Qur’an contains insights and understanding for mankind, and it is a source of guidance and mercy for those who possess certainty.

Q-54:17,22,32,40

And indeed, we have made the Quran easy for the sake of guidance; so, is there anyone who will seek guidance?

Q-08:02

Momin (true believers) are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned; when His verses are recited to them, their faith increases, and they place their trust in their Lord alone.

Q-32:15

Momin are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and who place their trust solely in their Lord.

4. Those who Establish Prayer and Pay Zakat.

Momin are steadfast in establishing prayer. At the appointed times, they rise from their beds, calling upon their Lord with both fear and hope. They also spend on those in need from what Allah has provided for them.

Q-32:16

Surely, the believers are those whose sides forsake their beds at the time of prayer. They call upon their Lord with fear and hope, and they spend on those in need from what We have provided for them.

Q-09:71

The believing men and believing women establish prayer and give charity (zakat).

Q-22:77

O you who believe, bow down and prostrate yourselves, worship your Lord, and do good deeds so that you may prosper.

5. Those Who Obey Allah and His messengers.

True Momin are those who have faith in Allah and His Messengers, in the Book that was revealed to the Messenger ﷺ, and in the Scriptures that were revealed to the prophets before him. They make no distinction between the messengers, harbor no doubt in their faith, and strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives.

Q-02:136

Say, “We believe in Allah and in what has been revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and their descendants; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and to the other prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him alone we submit.”

Q-49:15

The true Momin are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, then never fall into doubt, and who strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. It is they who are truthful in their faith.

Q-09:71

The Momin men and Momin women obey Allah and His Messenger. It is they upon whom Allah will bestow His mercy. Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Wise.

6. Those Who Avoid Major Sins and Haram Acts.

The Momins protect themselves from major sins and forbidden acts. Yet if, through human weakness, they should stumble into sin, they do not persist in it. Rather, they remember their Lord, seek His forgiveness with sincere remorse, and they return to the right path with sincere repentance.

They restrain themselves when anger arises, choosing pardon and forgiveness over revenge, and conduct themselves with patience and forbearance.

Q-42:36-37

For those (there is a great reward in the Hereafter) who believe and place their trust in their Lord; (36) and who avoid major sins and acts of indecency, and who forgive when angry; (37)

Q-03:135-136

And those believers who, when they commit an act of indecency or wrong themselves through sin, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins. And who can forgive sins except Allah? They do not knowingly persist in what they have done. (135)
Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they shall abide. (136)

7. Those who Guard Chastity.

True believing men and believing women safeguard their chastity and purity. They confine themselves to their lawful marital relationships and protect themselves from every unlawful relationship and forbidden path. Whoever seeks to satisfy their desires beyond the lawful bounds of marriage is transgressing the limits set by Allah.

Q-24:30-31

Tell the Momin men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is fully aware of all that they do. (30) And tell the Momin women likewise to lower their gaze and guard their chastity.

Q-23:05-07

And they are those who guard their chastity, (5) except with their spouses or those whom their right hands possess, for in that case they are free from blame. (6) But whoever seeks anything beyond that, then it is they who are the transgressors. (7)

8. Those Who Teach Righteousness.

Momin men and Momin women are allies and supporters of one another. They encourage what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, and obey Allah and His Messenger.

Q-18:110

Say, “I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is but One God. Therefore, whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord should do righteous deeds and should not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”

Q-09:112

Give glad tidings to the believers: those who repent, those who worship, those who praise Allah, those who pray, those who bow, those who prostrate, those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits set by Allah.

Such people are Momin. Surely, for them are ranks with their Lord according to their deeds, together with forgiveness and an honorable provision.

Trials of the Believers.

Allah tests His Momin servants through trials, refining them, strengthening them, and drawing them closer to Himself. The nearer a person comes to their Lord, the greater and more difficult their trials may become. Reflect upon the lives of the Noble Messenger (peace be upon him) and his noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them); consider the immense trials they had to endure for the sake of faith.

Islam is like a that mountain spring that flows down from the heights, colliding with rocks, removing the impurities within it, and continuing onward as it becomes increasingly clear and pure. In the same way, Allah places His believing servants through continuous trials in order to purify them, strengthen their faith, and increase them in guidance.

The experiences of life also bear witness to this reality: to attain new successes and reach higher goals, a person must pass through stages of hardship, patience, and sacrifice.

Q-67:02

He is the One who created death and life in order to test you as to which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, the Most Forgiving.

Q-29:11

And Allah will surely make known those who truly believe, and He will surely make known the hypocrites.

Q-02:155-157

And We shall certainly test you with fear, hunger, and the loss of wealth, lives, and fruits; but give glad tidings to those who are patient. (155)
Those who, when a calamity befalls them, say, “Surely, we belong to Allah, and surely to Him we shall return.” (156)Upon such people are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and it is they who are rightly guided. (157)

The Reward of the Momins: Garden of Eden.

The path to Paradise is not opened by mere claims made with the tongue. Faith in Allah and in His revelations is the fundamental requirement, but it is only through righteous deeds that the truth of that faith reaches its intended destination.

A true believer is one who embraces faith in the heart, professes it with the tongue, and bears witness to it through righteous deeds. Indeed, Allah grants guidance to those who combine faith with good works; and according to His promise, it is these guided believers who shall be the true inheritors of the Gardens of Eden.

Q-04:122

And those who believe and do righteous deeds, we shall admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they shall abide forever. This is the true promise of Allah, and who is more truthful in speech than Allah?

Q-98:07-08

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds, they are the best of creation. (7) Their reward with their Lord is the Garden of Eden, beneath which rivers flow. They shall abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. This reward is for the one who fears his Lord. (8)

Q-09:72

Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they shall abide forever, and pure dwellings in the Gardens of Eden, the everlasting gardens. But the pleasure of Allah is greater than all these blessings. That is the supreme success.

Angels of the Throne Supplication for Momins.

The angels who bear the Throne of Allah and those gathered around it continually glorify and praise their Lord. They believe in Him and seek forgiveness for the believers.

They pray: -

Our Lord, admit them into the everlasting Gardens that You have promised them, along with the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants. Surely, you alone are the Almighty, the All-Wise.

And protect them from evil deeds. Whoever You protect from evil on that Day, you have certainly granted Your mercy. And that is the supreme success.

Q-40:07-09

Those who bear the Throne and those around it glorify their Lord with His praise, believe in Him, and seek forgiveness for those who have believed, saying:

Our Lord, you encompass all things in mercy and knowledge. Therefore, forgive those who have repented and followed Your path, and protect them from the punishment of Hell. (7)

Our Lord, admit them into the everlasting Gardens which You have promised them, together with the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants. Surely, you are the Almighty, the All-Wise. (8)

And protect them from evil. And whoever You protect from evil on that Day, you have certainly shown mercy to him. And that is the greatest success.” (9)
